How August Unfolded
Our local partners were out again, same as every month.
For many of them, August was the hottest stretch of the summer. The bags of kibble still had to be lifted, loaded and carried out to the same stops.
At the bigger stops, it looked like this: dog after dog, each one at a bowl, all eating at the same time.
None of it looks impressive, and it is not supposed to. Every piece of jewelry purchased from Rescue Paws helps us provide 10 meals to abandoned dogs, and in August those meals went out the way they always do, one stop at a time.
The Dogs Got There First
More than once in August, the dogs were already at the stop before the food was.
Nobody tells them when to show up. They work it out. The same corner, around the same time, month after month, until waiting there becomes the most normal thing in the world.
That kind of trust takes a long time to build. And it is built out of one simple thing: somebody coming back.
Whatever Was Clean And Flat
Not every stop has bowls.
At some of them, the kibble went onto whatever was at hand: a flattened piece of cardboard, a concrete slab in the grass, the edge of a path.
The dogs never seemed to mind. What mattered was that the food came.
Five Months To Come Close
One dog on the route had a rule: she only ate after the people had walked away.
The team never pushed. For five months, they kept her bowl full and kept their distance.
In August, she ate two feet from a person, as calm as a house dog at dinner. Trust like that is built out of one thing: food that kept arriving.
What Happens Next
September feeding operations are already underway.
The same routes. The same stops. The dogs who already know the schedule, and whoever new turns up this time.
