Why Rescue Paws Is Not a Nonprofit

Why Rescue Paws Is Not a Nonprofit

We get this question a lot: "If you help dogs, why aren't you a charity?"

Fair question. Here's a clear, honest answer about The Rescue Paws — and why we believe our model actually helps us provide more meals to more dogs.

The short version

Rescue Paws is a purpose-driven company. We sell bracelets, and each item helps us provide 10 meals to dogs in need through our local partners. We are not a 501(c)(3). We run a business, and that business helps us provide tracked, documented meals.

We chose this model intentionally. Here's why.

Purpose-driven company vs. nonprofit: what's different?

Nonprofit (501c3) Purpose-driven company (Rescue Paws)
Revenue source Donations, grants, fundraising events Product sales (bracelets)
Consistency Depends on donor cycles and seasonal giving Runs year-round as long as people buy
Speed Grant applications, board approvals, reporting Bracelet sold → meals tracked and provided
Tax deductible? Yes (donations) No (it's a purchase, not a donation)
What you get Tax receipt A handcrafted bracelet + dog card + meals provided
Accountability IRS Form 990, public filings Tracked meals, delivery summaries, 1,000+ photos/videos on member platform, public feeding gallery

Neither model is better or worse. They're different tools for different jobs. We chose the one that lets us move fast and provide meals consistently.

Why a business model works for what we do

Consistency over seasonality

Many nonprofits see donations spike around holidays and drop during the rest of the year. Dogs need meals every day, not just in December. Because our revenue comes from product sales, we can provide meals year-round without depending on seasonal generosity.

Something people want to wear

Not everyone writes a check to a charity. But many people will buy a bracelet that looks good, feels good, and helps provide meals to dogs in need. Our bracelets reach people who might not otherwise engage with animal welfare at all. They start conversations. They get people asking, "What's that bracelet about?"

That's how we've helped provide over 500,000 meals. Not by asking for donations, but by making something people want.

Clear exchange

When you buy a Rescue Paws bracelet, you know exactly what you're getting: a product AND the knowledge that your purchase helps provide meals. There's no guessing about how your money is used. It's a bracelet, meals, shipping, and the cost of running the business. Simple.

Who else does this?

We're not the first purpose-driven company. This model has been proven by some well-known brands:

  • 4ocean — sells bracelets made from ocean plastic, uses revenue to fund ocean cleanup. Not a nonprofit.
  • Bombas — sells socks, donates a pair to shelters for every pair sold. Not a nonprofit.
  • TOMS — pioneered the one-for-one model with shoes. Not a nonprofit.
  • Who Gives A Crap — sells toilet paper, donates profits to build toilets in developing countries. Not a nonprofit.

The common thread: a real product people want, tied to a real purpose people care about. That's Rescue Paws.

Is my purchase tax-deductible?

No. Because we're a company, not a charity, your purchase is not tax-deductible. You're buying a product. We're upfront about this: it's a purchase with purpose, not a donation.

How we stay accountable without a 501(c)(3)

A tax status doesn't create accountability. Actions do. Here's ours:

  • Every meal tracked: Documented through delivery summaries with our local partners — how many meals, where, when.
  • 2,000+ photos and videos on the member platform, updated regularly.
  • Public feeding gallery: Browse real photos from feeding operations, no membership required. See the gallery →
  • Feeding updates: Monthly reports from our feeding operations around the world. See the feeding updates →
  • Dog cards in every order: Featuring a real dog story from feeding operations.
  • Verified reviews: Thousands of real customer reviews on Judge.me, an independent platform we can't edit.

We show our work. That's our accountability.

Can I donate to a shelter directly instead?

Yes, and you should if that feels right. Shelters do incredible work and every dollar helps. We encourage anyone who wants to donate directly to find a shelter near them.

Rescue Paws exists alongside that. We're for people who want to help dogs in need while getting something beautiful to wear. Both options help dogs. It's not one or the other.
